Change Country in iTunes to purchase an App
How to purchase or download an App or song only available in another country's iTunes Store
It has already happened to me twice that I wanted to download or purchase an app and it wasn't available in the UK iTunes store (where I'm currently located)
The only indication you will receive is a message box like below.
Once you login with your normal login you will find that you are still not able to purchase the applications, TV show, or Video
The latest incident was with the AWESOME Brand new, (free for a limited time only), speech recognition to text App from the makers of Dragon Naturally Speaking.
The App is currently FREE, which is shocking since the cheapest desktop version of the software is $199.99
At the moment it is only available on the US iTunes Store (1 Dec 2010)
So If you are from the US (or after following this advise) you can click the iTunes download link below to get it for free
If you are from another country and really need the App, either to review or because you like purchasing freedom,don't despair. There is a way get past this hurdle and give Apple and the developers your money.
Step by step Process to purchase from another country iTunes Store:
Step 1: Purchase a voucher.
I'm in the UK so had to get a US one from ebay:
Step 2 - Go into the iTunes store of the Country of your choice.
If you click a download link of a app which is not available in your country you can click the Change Store Button
Alternatively if you click iTunes Store in iTunes 9, then scroll down to the bottom of the page and click the link "Change country"
This is also useful to know that on the bottom right corner of iTunes store it will show you a flag to indicate which Country Store you are logged into.
Step 3 - At the bottom of the page click on "Redeem Voucher"
Step 4 - Register as a new user - your_gmail_username+USA@gmail.com might also work... if you don't wish to open a alternative email address.
Registration Process:
Don't associate a Credit card with the new account you will be creating, unless of course you have a bank account and credit card from that country if you are a bit of a world traveller...
For the rest of the world:
- You will need a physical address in the country of choice.
- You can select a real address from one of your friends in another country...or by using the Yellow Pages or your favorite online store's address or someone you know in the country where the app is available. US = http://www.yellowpages.com
- The address is not verified by Apple or iTunes because you are only redeeming a Voucher.
Step 5 - Login to the iTunes using your new account, Redeem your voucher and go shopping! (or downloading)
After redeeming your voucher you can download the application and it will be downloaded to your iTunes library.
Step 6 - Copy to your iPhone / iPod
Unfortunately you cannot sync your iPod or iPhone with more than one account but there is a little known technique which is also very useful for sharing apps with your friends legally.
- Open iTunes
- Click authorize computer
- Provide the new username and password you created in step 4
This will then tell you how many computers you have left that the application can be authorized to (You start with 5)
